“And he cast out Adam, and placed before Paradise a Cherub.”

Annotatio LVI

”And he cast out Adam, and placed before Paradise a Cherub.” — Genesis 3:24

The Seventy Interpreters, interpreting this saying, perverted the sense of the Hebrew truth, attributing that which is said of the Cherub to Adam himself1 — whom they write to have been placed before Paradise by God, in these words: καὶ ἐκάτῳκισεν αὐτὸν ἀπέναντι παραδείσου τῆς τρυφῆς [and he settled him over against the Paradise of delight], “And he settled him” — namely Adam — “before, or over against, the Paradise of delights.” Which indeed is not in the Hebrew.

Footnotes

  1. Left margin: Whether Adam, cast out of paradise, was placed before the door of paradise. (An Adam eiectus de paradiso, ante ostium paradisi positus sit.)
